Dobbins good on the mound, Anthony reaches base four times

9/13 cup of coffee: The two remaining partners will share their Thursday matches as both remain in second place in their respective divisions. A solid performance from Hunter Dobbins (pictured) and continued excellent performances at the batting mark by Roman Anthony led Worcester to another victory. Things didn’t go well in Portland, however, as the Sea Dogs only managed two goals and thus missed the chance to get back into first place.

The WooSox won their sixth straight game and tenth of eleven games and continued their push into the playoffs with a victory over the Mets. Hunter Dobbins was outstanding, earning his first Triple-A win. He allowed one run on six hits in six innings. He had five strikeouts, one walk, and the only point came on a rare solo home run in the fifth inning. Jose Adames returned to the Red Sox organization with a scoreless seventh inning. Adames pitched in 35 games with Portland and Worcester in 2021, then spent 2022 with the Dodgers and most of the last two seasons in the Mexican League. Wyatt Olds And Chase Shugart went one inning each to secure the win.

Chase Meidroth He was the batter, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run. His performance brought his batting average back above the .300 mark to .301. Roman Anthony reached base four times from the leadoff spot with a double and three walks and scored two runs. The top candidate in the game per Baseball America has a batting average of .340/.433/.528 since his promotion to the WooSox. Vaughn Grissom also had a few hits, along with a stolen base and an RBI.

Despite the win, Worcester failed to gain any ground in its playoff race, as each of the International League’s top four teams was victorious. The WooSox remain in second place, 2 1/2 games behind Columbus, with nine games remaining.

Portland lost for the third straight game as the Eastern League playoff hunt enters its final weekend. The offense was stymied Thursday as 2023 third-round pick Nolan McLain and two relievers combined for a two-hit shutout. Ahbram Liendo And Alex Binelas were the only players injured in Portland, both hitting singles, and no Sea Dogs player made it to third base. Connelly Früh was the victim of several defensive errors, as all six runs he allowed in his 4 2/3 innings were unearned. He struck out six times and walked two. Robert Kwiatkowski was a bright spot in the bullpen, allowing just one hit in 2 1/3 scoreless innings and striking out six of the nine batters he faced.

A loss to first-place Somerset (NYY) kept the Sea Dogs’ playoff hopes alive. With just three games of the regular season remaining, Portland is still half a game behind.

Player of the day: Hunter Dobbins had another strong start to a solid 2024 season. The 2021 eighth-round pick from Texas Tech has made 24 starts at two levels, posting a 3.21 ERA in 120 2/3 innings. Dobbins has made nine good starts and leads the organization, with much of his success coming from his ability to keep the ball in the park — the home run he allowed was just his second of the season and first since May 25. The 25-year-old right-hander has continued his steady climb up the rankings and is currently ranked 18th.
