Disagreement over roadworks @ August 15, 2024, Supervisory Board meeting

The August 15, 2024 Board of Supervisors meeting was opened by Board President Mitchell Chatman, followed by a prayer led by Charles Funchess and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Tim Gray, the Registrar, asked that the publication be acknowledged in the minutes of the Board of Directors and recorded as evidence:

Dr. Dewayne Middleton, President of Copiah-Lincoln Community College, thanked the board for supporting the Simpson Co-Lin Campus. Middleton informed the board and the public that Co-Lin has one of the lowest tuition rates in this part of the state. “Co-Lin is a great opportunity to further your education. At a junior college, money goes further,” explained Dr. Middleton.

County Engineer Greg Bounds reported on the status of the road and bridge projects. The Star Brandon Road project is almost complete but requires an additional $2,000 for concrete work.

Road Manager Ben Warren commended his road crews. “They worked in 110 degree heat.” A discussion about replacing or repairing a broken county tractor. The cost to repair the tractor is about $8,000. The board asked Mr. Warren to look into prices for a new tractor. The board did not want to spend that much money on a repair.

The IRS has requested a raise for Kendra Lee, who has completed her probationary period. The board has approved the request.

Sheriff Paul Mullins made the following report. The motion was granted.

Eric Bowen reported as follows:

The board’s attorney, Danny Welch, discussed the lease and the required liability insurance.

Jeremey gave an update on an inquiry to purchase asphalt from a company in Jackson. The company is under new management.

The meeting was adjourned for a closed session.
