The Tigers salvaged a win from their weekend series against the Giants yesterday with a 5-4 victory. Dillon Dingler hit his first major league home run and added a double. Matt Vierling also hit a home run. Keider Montero allowed all four of San Francisco’s runs in five innings, but Tyler Holton, Brenan Hanifee and Will Vest held the Giants to just two hits in the final four innings.

The Tigers are off today and host the Mariners tomorrow. Coverage begins at 6:15 a.m. on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers’ five-game winning streak ended yesterday with a 4-3 loss to the Reds. Joey Ortiz hit a home run. DL Hall pitched into the fifth inning and allowed three runs. Cincinnati scored the decisive point in the seventh inning against Joe Ross.

The Brewers host the Dodgers tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Clayton Kershaw.

Hall was recalled from the 60-day injured list to participate in yesterday’s game. Pitcher Hoby Milner was placed on the injured list because of a shoulder problem.

Pitcher Bryan Hudson could also return to the team tonight. He has completed a rehabilitation program after having to sit out some time due to an oblique abdominal muscle injury.

NFL

The Packers opened their test match campaign with a crisp 23-10 victory over the Browns on Saturday. Jordan Love made a brief appearance, throwing a 65-yard touchdown pass to Dontayvion Wicks.

Secondary school

Practices for fall high school sports begin today. The first local volleyball games will be played one week from Friday. The first local football games will be played on August 29.   • Barb Sickler, who led the Lake Linden-Hubbell girls track team to a UP title in 1982 and also coached and taught in Gwinn and Munising,
  • Olympic snowboard champion Nick Baumgartner, who excelled in football, track and field and wrestling in West Iron County,
  • Basketball player and coach Jamie Angeli from Iron River,
  • Basketball player and coach Rachel (Folcik) McClure, who led Carney-Nadeau to the state title,
  • Ski pioneer Jeannie Thoren from Marquette,
  • Lesley (Noel) Delvaux of Escanaba, the first UP softball player to receive a Big 10 scholarship,
  • Dave St. Onge of Ishpeming, who served as a high school and college basketball referee for 53 years,
  • Jeff Olson, who coached Ishpeming to three state high school football titles,
  • Longtime cross country and track and field coach John Prokos of Escanaba,

The UP Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on May 19 at the Island Resort and Casino in Harris.
