The Detroit Tigers will face Cleveland in the next round of the MLB playoffs.

The Tigers face the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday in Game 1 of the American League Division Series. Detroit advanced to the ALDS by defeating the Houston Astros in the wild-card series to advance and face Cleveland, who earned a bye as a top-two finisher in the AL.

The Tigers embrace the “pitching chaos” and start left-hander Tyler Holton for the second straight season. Holton started Game 2 against Houston and was recalled after one inning to begin the Tigers’ use of seven pitchers. On the other hand, Cleveland will go with a traditional starter in ace Tanner Bibee, who went 12-8 with a 3.47 ERA in 2024.

The best-of-five series begins with two games in Cleveland, followed by Games 3 and 4 (if necessary) in Detroit and a deciding Game 5 in Cleveland if the series is still undecided. The winner advances to the ALCS and meets the winner of the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals.

Pre-game notes

The Tigers experienced the ups and downs of a playoff baseball series in two games and emerged victorious to advance to the ALDS. Tarik Skubal delivered a Game 1 win that the bullpen was able to defend late into the night despite the Astros’ best performance, and a collective team effort capped by Andy Ibáñez’s three-run double to start the eighth inning, to seal the 5-2 win in Game 2 and the series.

The Guardians have had a full week off since the season ended last Saturday. The AL Central champions finished 92-69 and had a commanding lead over the Royals, Tigers and Twins in the second half of the season. José Ramírez, a well-known thorn in the Tigers’ side over the last decade, delivered another award-worthy season at third base, hitting .279 with 39 home runs, 119 RBIs and 41 stolen bases. The Guardians managed a makeshift rotation past Bibee with the best bullpen in baseball. The Guardians’ relievers led the majors with an ERA of 2.57 and a WHIP of 1.051, while the Tigers’ relievers ranked fifth in ERA (3.55) and second in WHIP (1.135).

The Guardians won the season series 7-6, although all of those games occurred on July 30 or earlier before the Tigers’ late surge. The Tigers outscored the Guardians 60-50 and lost five games by one run.
