Detroit Lions sign DE Isaiah Thomas from the Bengals’ practice squad

According to ESPN, the Detroit Lions are taking the first of potentially several steps to bolster their injury-plagued defensive line by signing edge rusher Isaiah Thomas from the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad.

Thomas, 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, played college at Oklahoma and was selected in the seventh round by the Cleveland Browns in the 2022 draft. As a rookie, he had one sack and nine tackles in ten games.

Thomas is the latest addition to a Lions defense that has likely already lost its top three edge rushers for the season.

Aidan Hutchinson broke the tibia and fibula in his left leg during Sunday’s win against the Dallas Cowboys and will undergo four to six months of rehab. Marcus Davenport is out for the season with a torn triceps he suffered in a Week 3 win against the Arizona Cardinals. And outside linebacker Derrick Barnes suffered a likely season-ending knee injury in the same game.

Josh Paschal replaced Davenport in the starting lineup, and the Lions used practice squad pass rusher Isaac Ukwu and linebacker Trevor Nowaske to close out the Cowboys game at defensive end.

Birkett: Brad Holmes owes it to the Super Bowl-bound Lions to add DE following Aidan Hutchinson’s injury

Lions coach Dan Campbell said Monday the team is open to adding veterans to its defensive line but is in no rush to make a move and wants to continue exploring its internal options.

“It comes up every year, and it doesn’t look like (general manager Brad Holmes) doesn’t,” Campbell said. “So he does what he did, he searches. Is there anyone out there who could possibly help us? What will it cost? And so these things will always come up, but just because they’re there doesn’t mean we’re going to do it. And it must be true if it is so.
