    Detroit Free Press Marathon 2024: Route maps, road closures

    The 47th annual Detroit Free Press Marathon presented by MSU Federal Credit Union is this weekend, meaning there will be numerous road closures and detours in downtown Detroit.

    The Detroit Marathon event schedule takes place Friday through Sunday in downtown Detroit and Canada, with races (and road closures) occurring on Saturdays and Sundays. Various races, some international, and downtown events will take place over the weekend and numerous roads will be closed around Detroit and Windsor.

    Here’s what you need to know—and maps you can use whether you’re a runner, a spectator, or just trying to get around this weekend.

    The marathon and international half marathon will once again cross the Ambassador Bridge to Windsor, Ontario. There will be limited traffic on the international bridge and the race will use a “wave start” to reduce foot traffic at the narrow entrance. Runners will return to Michigan in the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, which will be closed from 6:15 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday.

    Once the race returns to the US, runners will run down Washington Blvd. to Grand Circus Park and transfer to Woodward. The race turns on Fisher Dr. just before I-75. south and then returns along 2nd Avenue to Woodbridge. The race ends on 3rd Avenue. At Willis it goes back to W. Warren and back to Fisher Dr. along Cass Ave. The race then flows into Eastern Market along Winder and Wilkins St.

    The race runs to Mack Ave. and then heads back east on the Dequindre Cut at St. Aubin St. The race turns north on Lafayette St. before making a final turn back downtown via Lafayette and reaching the finish line at Campus Martius.

    Road closures at the Detroit Marathon

    Major road closures due to this weekend’s Detroit Marathon include:

    • Southbound: Woodward Avenue starting at Adelaide Street
    • I-75 Exit 50, North and South (Grand River)
    • Fort Street at Grand Boulevard
    • Lodge heading south on the highway after the Howard Street exit
    • The number of northbound streets off Jefferson Avenue will be limited.
