Derek Hough breaks down in tears as he remembers his wife Hayley Erbert’s brain surgery

Before the appearance in Dancing with the stars ballroom with his wife, Derek Hough looked back Hayley Erbert‘s health scare.

A sneak peek of the package, which will air on the Tuesday, Oct. 15, episode, begins with a clip from their wedding day in August 2023. “I love you with all my heart, Hayley,” Hough, 39, agreed Erbert. 30, at the altar.

Hough looks forward and reflects on her newlywed life. “It was kind of a crazy time because so much was happening,” the package says. “Newlyweds. I just married the woman I love.”

The video shows Erbert on their wedding day proclaiming, “I always knew it was you, Derek.” Confetti shot around the couple after they exchanged their vows.

After the finale in December 2023, Hough and Erbert “hit the road again” for the final leg of their Symphony of Dance Tour.

“Living out our dreams on stage, doing what we love with the person we love, and then it all came to a devastating halt,” Hough says.

Hough remembers standing on stage waiting for Erbert to join him during their tour. “The stage manager walked out and just said, ‘Hey, she’s not coming on stage.’ She was on the sidelines, having severe seizures and basically dying,” he says.

Derek Hough said he felt some “relief” as he shared an update a week after his wife Hayley Erbert underwent emergency brain surgery. “As you all know, the last week has been a challenging journey for us as a life-threatening event suddenly came into our lives,” the 38-year-old “Dancing With the Stars” judge captioned a video (…)

Hough says it’s “really hard to put into words” other than feeling “pure fear” at the moment. “We rushed her to the hospital, she’s still in her costume,” Hough explains.

“The doctor came to me and said she had a severe brain bleed, so we needed surgery immediately,” Hough recalled through tears. “He said she might not make it. And even if she does, she won’t be the same person.”

In December 2023, Hough shared that Erbert had undergone an emergency craniectomy after suffering from a hematoma. Weeks later, she had to undergo a second operation to replace a large portion of her skull that had been removed during the first procedure.

The couple continued to spend the holidays “overwhelmed with gratitude that the surgery was a success and Hayley is on the mend,” an insider said exclusively Us weekly at the time. The source noted that the scare gave them “a new appreciation for their life together.”

Erbert finally returned to the studio in March and received a standing ovation from the audience at her first performance a month later. The two are also working on another project, which they announced exclusively to Us in August.

“We’re working on something right now,” Hough revealed at the time. “That we’re looking forward to sharing it with people.” He added: “It’s going to be really nice.”

Dancing with the stars airs simultaneously on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and Disney+. Episodes are available to stream the next day on Hulu and Disney+.
