Blomberg died last week when he was hit by a car while crossing the street. He was on his way to a fire department meeting.

“It comforts me to know that he was not alone in his final moments. He was surrounded by a lot of first responders,” said Bob Blomberg, brother. “It’s impossible to imagine that I’ll never talk to him again.”

Blomberg served Newtown for 50 years, most recently as assistant fire chief with the Botsford Fire Department.

“You see the true brotherhood. In good times and bad, we are one big family and brothers and sisters in the fire department,” said Kenny Walker, CT Firefighters Pipes and Drums.

Blomberg’s funeral service took place in Newtown on Sunday.

The outpouring of grief continued at 10:30 a.m. Monday when Blomberg’s family and friends hosted his funeral at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Those who knew him say he was always there to help those in need, adding that he responded to two fire calls on the day he died.

As friends, family and first responders said goodbye, Monsignor Robert Weiss shared a touching story of Blomberg’s lifelong commitment to his community, including in the days following the Sandy Hook tragedy.

“During our crisis at Sandy Hook, this man was here at all eight funerals held at this church. He was in the parking lot handing out tissues, bringing water and hugging some people. He was so present for people who were so broken, those are the things we remember,” said Rev. Monsignor Robert Weiss, pastor emeritus of St. Rose of Lima Church.

Blomberg should be buried with honor at St. Rose Cemetery.

He leaves behind four daughters and a grandson, who is described as the apple of his grandfather’s eye.
