Deputies cordon off Newsome High due to possible threat

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – Update, 3:15 p.m.: Sheriff Chad Chronister said Newsome High School students will be dismissed on time.

He said about 200 officers responded to a report of a threat on Friday and “searched every square inch of this school.”

The sheriff said students driving to school would be released at 2:50 p.m. and that officers would help maintain traffic flow.

The rest of the student body was dismissed at 3:25 p.m.

The incident is still under investigation.

Officials are investigating a possible threat Friday afternoon at Newsome High School.

According to Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister, officers have been on the school grounds on Fishhawk Boulevard in Lithia for several hours and the school is on lockdown. The office’s School Threat Assessment Response Team received a tip about the potential threat at around 8:47 a.m.

Authorities are currently trying to determine the credibility of the threat. No one is currently allowed to enter the school.

The sheriff’s office said no firearm was found.

Officials said via social media this afternoon:

“Parents, please do not attempt to pick up your children from school. Park at the Shops of Fishhawk across the street. Our officers are on site ensuring the safety of all students and staff. We understand your concerns and thank you for your cooperation.”
