Delta Air Lines introduces the Airbus A330-900neo on daily flights from Accra to New York

Delta Air Lines began using its Airbus A330neos New York JFK Airport (JFK) too Accra Kotoka International Airport (ACC) on October 1st. These replaced the airline’s Boeing 767s on the route and are a testament to Ghana’s importance within the airline’s network.

Upgrades to Ghana

Delta Air Lines has increased its presence on flights to Ghana by modernizing the aircraft used on the JFK to ACC route. Previously served with the Boeing 767-300ER, the airline has switched the route to the Airbus A330-900. The daily A330neo flight will add nearly 1,000 more weekly seats on the route, increasing Delta’s total capacity between the two countries by around 30%.

The airline’s A330-900s have 281 seats, compared to the 767s which have fewer than 230, varying depending on the configuration. The A330neos feature the airline’s four cabins, including Delta One Suites, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin. This ensures that it stays that way, they say “the largest operator in the US-Ghana market” through his daily JFK flight.

When the company announced the modernization of its route between JFK and ACC back in April, it also announced similar changes to its 10-weekly connecting flights Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) with Johannesburg airport (JNB) and Cape Town (CPT) routes. It was decided to use the A350-900 on these flights, increasing the capacity of the Delta One Suite by eight seats. Delta One’s total configuration increased to 40. The A350 launched from JNB in mid-June, while passengers flying to CPT were able to take advantage of the modern widebody aircraft from September 9th. Joe Esposito, senior vice president of network planning at Delta, said:

“These improvements reflect our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our customers. We are expanding our opportunities for customers to experience the world-class service and elevated hospitality they have come to expect from Delta.”

Delta in Africa

Delta has a notable presence in Africa, especially compared to its American competitors. American Airlines does not offer service to the continent, while United Airlines offers several flights to countries such as Morocco and South Africa.

In an interview with Simple Flying last year, Jimmy Eichelgruen, Delta’s head of sales for Africa, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, told us:

“The US is crucial, but it is a mature market so you have to look at international destinations. So we have a very mature market, and then there is Europe, for example, which is mature, then look.” According to IATA, Africa appears to be a growth area. So it’s obviously in our interest to shine a spotlight on Africa and we’re committed to serving Africa.

Delta Air Lines has the second largest presence in the US Africa market compared to any other airline. Ethiopia Airlines takes the top spot with various services from its Addis Ababa hub. However, Delta Air Lines is not far behind. It says it carries over 500,000 customers each year on more than 34 weekly flights between the two continents.
