Deadpool and Wolverine director almost made Channing Tatum’s Gambit film

I was one of 25 different directors who met with Channing to discuss directing the Fox Gambit movie, and yet it never happened.
. So when we decided to cast Gambit in this film, we knew it would be deeply satisfying for Channing.”

Not only was Channing Tatum’s cameo appearance as Gambit one of the Deadpool and Wolverines most satisfying moments, but also one of the film’s funniest. Thanks to Tatum’s devotion to speaking with an exaggerated Cajun accent, most of his lines are completely unintelligible, something which Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) frequently picks up on. The film hasn’t even been released on video yet, but a pirated clip of the movie has turned Tatum’s iconic line, “Whoo, I’m going to make a name for myself here!” into a viral meme..

Director Shawn Levy talks about the possibility of his own “Snydercut” as part of the DVD and Blu-ray release of Deadpool & Wolverine.


It turned out that it wasn’t just the audience that couldn’t stop laughing at Tatum’s performance, because Daphne Keen (who plays Laura/X23) struggled to stay serious during their scenes together. Speaking to the Phase Zero podcast, Keen revealed that filming her scenes with Tatum was nearly impossible as she would get choked up every time he spoke his lines. Ultimately, the actress had to ask Tatum to be quiet while filming for her coverage. Keen revealed:

“I had to tell him he couldn’t say his lines when I was recording. He kept trying, and I kept falling out of character. I was doing my brooding Wolverine vibe. I said (in a brooding tone), ‘Yeah, let’s fucking do it!’ And then he said (imitating Gambit), ‘I put my balls in my buttery mama.’ I said, ‘No. Shut up. I’ve got a job to do here. You’re making it so hard for me.'”
