Days of storms in the south cause a risk of flash floods every day this week

A stormy series of days is looming in the southeast as a stalled front moves across the region.

The front will act as a conveyor belt for the storms, allowing the rain to pile up. It will take some time for the rain to move north again because there is a large area of high pressure in the northeast that is blocking the rain, the FOX Forecast Center said.

“The yellow you see (below) represents 2-3 inches widespread,” said Michael Estime, meteorologist for FOX Weather. “This is not only a problem in Florida, but also in Mississippi and Alabama … those orange tones and some pumpkin orange represent 3-5 inches.”

The rain will gradually ease each day as the northern high moves east over the Atlantic. Until then, torrential rain is expected, and with it the possibility of flash flooding, every day this week.

It is the same system that the National Hurricane Center has been monitoring developing along the coasts of Texas and Louisiana. The low pressure system is expected to move ashore mid-week, reducing the chances of tropical development.

A large-scale disturbance just off the Gulf of Mexico, currently drenching Texas and Louisiana, is being monitored for possible tropical development.

Adding to an already chaotic week, a low-pressure system could potentially form along the front, bringing heavier rainfall to Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas through the weekend.
