David Shore joins 20th Television for a new overall deal

EXCLUSIVE: After 12 years at Sony Pictures Television, The good doctor Creator David Shore is joining 20th Television, part of Disney Television Studios, under a premium overall deal. Under the three-year deal, which begins in November when his most recent overall deal with Sony TV expires, Shore will develop, write and executive produce original series for 20th Television aimed at linear networks and streamers, with a focus on Disney Entertainment Television’s platforms.

Shore has only owned two studios in the past two decades. He spent eight years at Universal Television, where he created, executive produced and ran successful medical dramas. House before moving to Sony TV shortly after the series finished its eight seasons on Fox in 2012. He will develop and produce new series for 20th TV through his company Shore Z Prods, alongside development director Erin Gunn, who joined the company in 2012, just months after Shore was hired by Sony TV. After first diving into the field of hot original series with the series “Shore Z Prods” in 2015, Sneaky Pete, Shore is expected to increase its efforts there while continuing to develop for broadcast. There are only a few major TV studios left, including Disney TV Studios, that offer both. (Most indie studios, including Sony TV, have veered away from broadcast and produce primarily for streaming.)

“I’ve been extremely lucky throughout my career to be able to work with amazing creative partners. Change is scary, but it’s also invigorating,” Shore said. “I’m thrilled to be joining 20th Television, where I’ll have the opportunity to work with Eric (Schrier) and Karey (Burke) and Craig (Erwich) and all of their incredible teams across the company. But most of all, I’m looking forward to all the nice things they’ll say about me in their press release.”

Shore, a former practicing lawyer and partner in a small Toronto law firm, originally planned a career as a comedy writer, but his legal background helped him break into drama with a LA Law which earned him his first job as a writer, at Paul Haggis’ Due southIn 1996, David E. Kelley chose Shore as one of the three writers for the Emmy-winning first season of The practice. After stints in series such as law and order And Family lawShore wrote the pilot script for House in only his second development attempt.

For his work on the Fox medical drama, Shore received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, as well as four nominations for Best Drama Series, the Humanitas Prize, the Peabody Award and the WGA Award.

He then developed a Korean format and served as executive producer and showrunner for The good doctorwhich investigated a legal spinoff The good lawyer in the last season. The double strike in Hollywood affected the fate of the latter series, which had good prospects of being selected for series, but ultimately failed to make it as the work stoppage lasted until the fall.
