According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna defeated a demon named Narakasura on this day. It is believed that Lord Krishna took oil bath on this day after killing the demon Narakasura during Brahma Muhurat. Therefore, believers should take a ritual oil bath before sunrise on this day. Furthermore, it is considered auspicious to light a lamp facing south in honor of Lord Yama on the night before Diwali. The diya is called Yam Deep.
