Darrell “Housh” Doucette of Flag Football: NFL players “disrespectful” to the sport

There is a lot of anticipation for Olympic Flag Football, the newest event of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Since the event takes place before the start of the 2028 NFL season, there is an opportunity for current professional players to participate in the flag football tournament.

The idea that NFL players step onto the field and immediately become an integral part of a squad – which is what the Hype video that the league released this month with Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts – does not go down well with flag football champion and US national team quarterback Darrell “Housh” Doucette.

He even went so far as to say that he saw the video as a threat to his job.

“I think it’s disrespectful that they automatically assume that they can make the Olympic team because of who they are – they didn’t help make this game big enough to make the Olympics,” Doucette said in a recent interview. “The guys that helped make this game this big, we give respect. … We just don’t think that they can walk out on the field and make the Olympic team because of their name, right? They still have to go out there and compete.”

Doucette, 35, helped Team USA win the 2021 IFAF Men’s Flag Football World Championship, take gold at the 2022 World Games, win the 2023 Americas Continental Flag Football Championship and earn MVP honors along the way.

Team USA has won gold (2010, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2021) and silver (2012) in five of the 10 IFAF World Championships since the tournament’s inception in 2002. The 11th biennial event will be held later this month, August 27-30, in Finland and will feature 32 men’s and 23 women’s national teams from six continents.

The United States, ranked No. 1 in the world for both men and women, will compete in Group A.

But how likely are NFL players to even want to participate in the Olympics?

Freshman Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, who was drafted first in April, recently said in a moment captured on Hard Knocks that he would be interested in playing for Team USA if it participates in the 2028 Games.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has previously mentioned that he would love to play alongside current teammate Ja’Marr Chase and former LSU teammate Justin Jefferson. “I really want to play for the Olympic flag football team,” Burrow said. “Me and my friends are out there playing football. I think that would be really cool.” Burrow also added that it would be “embarrassing” if the U.S. did not win a gold medal in the first Olympics where flag football is played.
