Darius Rucker sentenced to probation in 2023 for drug offenses

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WSMV) – Singer Darius Rucker was back in a Williamson County courtroom Tuesday morning to face charges related to a 2023 traffic stop in which cops found drugs in his car.

Rucker appeared and pleaded no contest to his charge of simple possession of a controlled substance. His other charges of simple possession and a violation of Tennessee’s vehicle registration law were dismissed.

The famous singer was charged with drug possession following a traffic stop in Franklin in 2023.

Rucker was arrested on February 1, 2024, nearly a year after psychedelic drugs were found in his car during a traffic stop in Franklin, Tennessee, according to his affidavit.

On February 19, 2023, a Franklin Police Department officer stopped Rucker for a traffic violation on Murfreesboro Road. Police said they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the singer’s GMC pickup truck. When asked, Rucker said he had been “smoking weed in the vehicle,” but not that night, according to the affidavit.

While searching the vehicle, an officer found 14 unstamped, gray-purple pills and a THC pen labeled “88.5% THC,” the affidavit states. Police said they also found a blunt on Rucker.

Rucker told police his girlfriend gave him the items and he didn’t know what the pills were. He was arrested after the pills tested positive for psilocybin, a psychedelic drug and Schedule I controlled substance.

With his plea of “no contest,” Rucker and his lawyers waived the right to a trial and accepted a sentence of 11 months and 29 days probation.

Once Rucker’s probation is complete, his criminal record will be expunged.

Mark Puryear and Richard Gusler, Rucker’s attorneys, issued the following statement after the discussion:

“On behalf of Darius, we would like to thank the Honorable Judge Tom Taylor and the District Attorney’s Office for the time and care they took in reviewing the details of this case and reaching its final disposition. Additionally, we would like to thank the members of the Franklin Police Department and the Williamson County Sheriff’s Department for the respectful and professional manner in which they treated Darius throughout the proceedings. Darius looks forward to completing this probationary period and putting this all behind him.”
