Dana Bash confronts JD Vance over Trump’s military service

CNN presenter Dana Bash pressed Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) via Donald Trump’s Military deferments after becoming Vice President Kamala Harris Vice-candidate Tim Walz because of the Democratic governor’s claims about his service in the National Guard.

Trump was deferred from the draft five times during the Vietnam War, once for foot problems and four times for college. Walz attacked Trump for this at a rally over the weekend after he was criticized by the right for his previous claims that he carried weapons “in war,” which were untrue, including a resurfaced clip from 2018.

Walz served in the Army National Guard for 24 years, but left in 2005 to run for Congress. Before leaving, he was deployed to Italy to support the U.S. war effort in Afghanistan, but was never deployed on combat missions during his service.

Bash pressed Vance in an interview on Sunday, asking him whether he also found Trump’s military refusal “shameful.”

BASH: Donald Trump did not serve in the military. He received a medical draft deferment for bone spurs to avoid serving in the Vietnam War, supposedly as a favor to his father. Do you also find that shameful?

VANCE: I believe Donald Trump did not serve in the military, but he did not lie about it. Dana, I have known Donald Trump for a long time. You don’t think he honors my service or that he served for it? Donald Trump did not lie about his military service. He did not say he was in Vietnam when he was not. That is the problem. I do not criticize anyone, whether they served our country or not. I think it is honorable to serve. But of course, many people have reasons not to serve. I criticize someone who embellishes their accomplishments by lying and saying, “I went to war.” I did. Do you think it is a problem that he said, “I went to war,” but he did not? In fact, that seems to me to be a problem.
