Damon Wayans’ grumpy DJ argues with his new female co-host – note!

In the series premiere of CBS’ Poppa’s houseDamon Wayans’ titular father and DJ already has two major rivalries to contend with. There’s nothing a rap battle or two can’t solve.

In the opening moments of the episode, we meet Poppa and his adult son Junior (Damon Wayans Jr.), who is eager to quit his job selling his father-in-law’s foam rollers to pursue a career as a director. JJ (played by Geoffrey Owens) not only gave Junior the gig, but he also loaned him the money to buy his family’s home. Not only does Junior owe him one, but he’s also stuck in a sticky situation since he’s secretly giving interviews elsewhere.

Poppa, on the other hand, is a legendary radio DJ in New York City with a show called – you guessed it! – “Poppa’s House.” When we visit his workplace, we see how grumpy Poppa can be towards his listeners and colleagues. Here comes Dr. Ivy Reed (Essence Atkins) comes into play, whom the network wants to include in its show in order to appeal to a more female audience. Poppa is not pleased, leading to an awkward and painfully unfunny exchange of freestyle rhymes. The bosses also want to stream videos for Poppa’s show, another idea he absolutely loathes. So he goes out.

Back at the house, Junior tells his father that he missed a big work meeting and got fired while sneaking around for his interview. His wife Nina (Tetona Jackson) is rightly imprisoned. She wants to send her children to private school and her patience with Junior’s wavering career aspirations is more than exhausted. Later, JJ comes to the house where Nina, Junior and Poppa are trying to get Junior’s job back. Then we learn about the decades-long rivalry between Poppa and JJ, which is of course just played for fun. JJ says that Junior can get his job back, but only if he agrees to step into the leadership position and really commit. Junior agrees, at least for now.

As for Poppa, he’s stuck in the past and talks about his industry’s past. He admits that cameras unsettle him, but after a pep talk from his son, Poppa gets back to work with a new attitude. But when he gets back on the microphone, he quickly lashes out at Ivy, leading to a heated back-and-forth on air. After Ivy calls him her “idol” and admits to listening to him every day in college, Poppa softens. Ivy says he became a cheapskate after his divorce and she doesn’t want him to go out like that. Her kind words weaken his defenses just enough for the two co-hosts to continue with the show and take some calls. (Although they both deserve it when the first caller says they sound like an old, arguing married couple.)
