Damage and road closures caused by fallen trees after thunderstorms

Thunderstorms and heavy gusts of wind have caused inconvenience in several parts of the Netherlands. Trees have fallen in several places, including on roads and the railway. The orange weather warning that was in place in Gelderland, Overijssel, Brabant and Limburg has now been lifted. Only in Limburg are some heavy thunderstorms expected on Saturday evening.

Thunderstorms and heavy gusts of wind have caused inconvenience in several places in the Netherlands. Trees have fallen onto roads and tracks throughout the country. The Code Orange weather warning that applied to Gelderland, Overijssel, Brabant and Limburg has now been lifted. Only in Limburg are some heavy thunderstorms expected.

In Hollandsche Rading (Utrecht), several trees fell on the Graaf Floris V street. The fire brigade was on site to clear the street. In addition, a large tree fell in a sports park in Sassenheim during a football match. Although two people landed under the tree, no one was injured, Omroep West reported.

There are no trains running between Beilen and Assen because of a tree on the line. According to NS, it will take until 11:30 p.m. on Sunday for trains to run normally again. There are also fewer trains running between Zwolle and Meppel because of a fallen tree.

The A28 near Spier (Drenthe) is closed because there are many trees lying on the road. Around 50 people who had parked their cars in an unsafe place, for example near slanting trees or branches, were cared for by coach. One person was trapped by a tree on their car, but there were no injuries, the security region said. The A28 is expected to be reopened at around 11.30 p.m. The N375 is also closed between Pesse and Zwartsluis due to “obstacles on the road,” reported the ANWB.

In the Frisian village of Houtigehage, several roofs of a residential building caught fire on Saturday evening after being struck by lightning. However, no one was injured.

During the night into Saturday, several more strong thunderstorms passed over Limburg. Especially in the south of Limburg, there is “a local risk of gusts of wind and a slight risk of flooding,” warned the national weather institute KNMI on Saturday.

According to Weeronline, Sunday is expected to be sunny and dry after the stormy Saturday evening. There may only be isolated showers in the north. The westerly wind will be moderate over land and quite strong at sea and on the IJsselmeer.
