Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

After a tough road win last week against division rival New York Giants, the Dallas Cowboys gave it their all again in Week 5, earning a 20-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers Football on Sunday evenings. It was a battle from start to finish, but you have to admire the courage of the Cowboys to prevail against a tough opponent.

Today we’re taking a look at some of the things that went right and wrong for the Dallas Cowboys in this Week 5 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. There was a lot of bad and ugly on Sunday night, but some good things happened too. Below we will identify and discuss them all.

THE GOOD – Rico Dowdle and Jalen Tolbert

This week’s good thing from the Dallas Cowboys’ Week 5 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers is a tie between Rico Dowdle and Jalen Tolbert. Dowdle rushed for 87 yards on the ground on 20 carries and added another 27 yards and a touchdown through the air. Tolbert led the Cowboys with seven catches for 87 yards through the air and caught the game-winning TD with just 20 seconds left. These two contributed greatly when needed, helping Dallas secure the “W” this week.

THE BAD – Marshawn Kneeland/Tyler Guyton injuries

When it rains, it pours. The Dallas Cowboys suffered another major blow at the DE position when Marshawn Kneeland left the game against the Steelers early in the first half and did not return with a knee injury. As if that wasn’t enough, Dallas also saw Tyler Guyton leave the game with some sort of lower leg injury and not return. The Cowboys were already dealing with several significant injuries to key players in this Week 5 game, and losing those two for an extended period of time would make things worse.

THE UGLY – Steelers third-down efficiency

The Cowboys defense was without some of its star players in Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence and then lost Marshawn Kneeland early in the first quarter. Despite all of that, they still managed to hold the Steelers to 3 of 12 on third-down conversions. That’s an ugly rate for an offense that features a dual-threat QB in Justin Fields. Big thanks to Trevon Diggs and others for shutting down star receiver George Pickens, who had three catches for 26 yards in the game. The Cowboys defense performed well for the second straight year this year.
