    Dak Prescott returns to Mississippi State football for team anniversary

    STARKVILLE – Mississippi State captivated the college football world ten years ago with arguably the best team of the century.

    On Saturday, the 2014 Bulldogs, including current Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and former coach Dan Mullen, were honored for their 10th anniversary during MSU’s game against Texas A&M at Davis Wade Stadium.

    Before kickoff, the 2014 team stood in the south end zone around MSU’s giant cowbell. Prescott rang the cowbell while Mullen stood next to him.

    The 2014 team earns the distinction of being the first team ever to be ranked No. 1 in the inaugural College Football Playoff poll. MSU started the season 9-0 with three straight wins over top ten teams LSU, Texas A&M and Auburn. It remained No. 1 in the CFP poll for three weeks until losing its first game of the season at Alabama.

    However, Mississippi State also lost to Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl and missed the College Football Playoff. It fell to Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl with a 10-3 record. It is the only time this century that MSU has won 10 games in a season.

    Where the 2014 Mississippi State football team is now located

    Five players from the 2014 team are currently playing in the NFL, including Prescott and defensive lineman Chris Jones. Prescott signed a new four-year contract with the Cowboys in September that made him the highest-paid player in the league with an average annual value of $60 million. According to Spotrac, Jones, in his ninth season with the Kansas City Chiefs, is the NFL’s second-highest paid defensive player with an average annual value of $31.75 million.

    Offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins is in his sixth season with the Green Bay Packers; Defensive end Preston Smith is in his 10th NFL season, also with the Packers; Punter Logan Cooke is in his seventh season with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

    Mullen is currently an ESPN broadcaster after being fired as Florida coach in 2021.
