Current battleground states poll on voter deadline day

Today is the last day to register for both in-person and early voting in two battleground states, Arizona and Georgia, which will likely be crucial in determining the next president on November 5th.

Voters in both states will elect the president and other federal, state and local officials. Arizona voters will also vote for a U.S. senator to replace independent incumbent Kyrsten Sinema.

Voters in Georgia can check their registration on the Georgia Secretary of State website. There they can confirm whether their registration is active and which polling station they need to go to. Voters can register online here or at their local elections office. Applications must be submitted by midnight today. Early voting begins next week, October 15th.

Polls in Georgia indicate an incredibly close race. Donald Trump won by over 100,000 votes in 2016, and Joe Biden narrowly led the state by 11,779 votes in 2020, a number revealed by Trump’s phone call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger on January 2, 2021, in which Trump officially polled 11,780 Voices said “would wipe out the loss.”

Earlier this year, Trump dominated polls in the state against Joe Biden, but polls have tightened since Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee. As of October 7, FiveThirtyEight had Trump ahead by 1.4 points at 48.4 percent over Harris at 47 percent.

A poll conducted by Quinnipiac University between September 25 and 29 gave Trump a lead of six points, more than any other recent poll.

Polls in Arizona paint a similar picture, where Trump was well ahead of Biden at the start of the year but the race has narrowed since Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee. As of October 7, FiveThirtyEight had Trump ahead by 1.6 points at 48.2 percent over Harris at 46.6 percent.

In the most recent Arizona poll, conducted by RMG Research between September 30 and October 2, Trump led by four points. 783 likely voters were surveyed.

In the Arizona Senate race, Democrat Ruben Gallego is dominating Republican Kari Lake by double digits in polls. Lake is a loyal Trump ally and a prominent MAGA politician.

The seat is currently held by Kyrsten Sinema, who left the Democratic Party in December 2023 to become an independent and then decided not to run for re-election.

Lake gained national prominence as a figure in former President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement after she resigned as a news anchor to run for governor of Arizona in 2021. She led a campaign focused on securing the U.S.-Mexico border, protecting gun rights, and protesting COVID-19 lockdowns, “cancel culture,” and “woke” school curricula.

She lost the election to Katie Hobbs by just over 17,000 votes, but refused to concede because she believed the election was unfair.

Lake’s defeat in 2022 continues to haunt her in her 2024 Senate campaign. She has suffered several legal setbacks this year, including in March when she admitted that she had defamed a fellow Republican by accusing him of a conspiracy to rig the Senate 2022 gubernatorial election and lost its sixth appeal against the results of the same election in June.

Newsweek has reached out to the Harris, Trump, Lake and Gallego campaigns for comment.
