CSI men’s and women’s soccer teams play against high-ranking opponents, but narrowly fail

CASPER, Wyo. (KMVT/KSVT) – The College of Southern Idaho men’s and women’s soccer teams each played their second game in program history Saturday afternoon against ranked Casper Community College, ranked 10th in the men’s rankings and 16th in the women’s rankings.

The women’s match came first and the Thunderbirds opened the scoring with a goal through Taylor Miller’s boot in the first half before Michelle Cave doubled the lead for the home side before half-time.

CSI pulled one back in the second half with a fantastic cross from Elle Hokanson that hit the crossbar perfectly and bounced right to Twin Falls’ Jayva Hicks for her first college goal of her career.

The Golden Eagles women failed to score another goal and had to settle for a 1-2 loss against Casper.

CSI’s men played as good a game as they could without pulling off the surprise: they held the nation’s tenth-ranked team to a halt for 85 minutes and were even a man down thanks to a red card in the 35th minute.

However, a costly error resulted in a penalty for Casper and Court Gonsalez was able to beat CSI goalkeeper Pedro De Andrade, despite the latter blocking a large portion of the shot as it rolled over the goal line.

The Golden Eagles men also fell, suffering a tough 1-0 loss to Casper, but both teams played very hard against some quality opponents early in the program.
