CrossFit Games athlete Lazar Đukić drowns during swimming competition in Fort Worth

Lazar Đukić, who competed in the 2024 CrossFit Games, died Thursday after reportedly drowning in a lake in Fort Worth, Texas, on the opening day of the competition.

CrossFit officials said Đukić, a 28-year-old from Serbia, died during the first event, a 3.5-mile run followed by a half-mile swim in Marine Creek Lake.

According to the Tarrant County Coroner’s Office, Đukić was pronounced dead at 10:24 a.m.

The remaining events scheduled to take place on Thursday were cancelled by the authorities.

In a statement published on X, the CrossFit Games paid tribute to Đukić:

Today is the saddest day in CrossFit history. We are devastated by the loss of Lazar Đukić and the entire CrossFit community. Lazar was one of our sport’s most talented competitors, but he was much more than just an athlete. He was a son, a brother, and a friend to virtually everyone who knew him. Highly competitive, incurably cheerful, and uncommonly kind, Lazar was the sunshine in any room he was in.

The loss of his light is unfathomable. The first instinct is to shut down. To isolate. To grieve. But the only cure for grief is to grieve. And the best way to grieve is together. In our community, we pay tribute to him by coming together to do difficult things. In that spirit, we have decided to move forward with the 2024 CrossFit Games.

This weekend is dedicated to Lazar Đukić. We open tomorrow at 10:00.

Officials said that after discussions with the athletes and Đukić, the decision was made to continue the event over the weekend.

There will be a ceremony honoring Đukić on Friday morning at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, the main venue of the CrossFit Games.

On Wednesday, Đukić posted on Instagram that his goal was to reach the podium at the 2024 CrossFit Games alongside his brother Luka, who also participated.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support Đukić’s family, and as of Friday morning, nearly $300,000 has been raised.

Don Faul, CEO of CrossFit, said a safety plan is in place and security personnel are on site, and details of the incident are being reviewed with local police.

“We will continue to focus on our community and family even in this tragic situation,” Faul said.

“There are many people in the community who are suffering right now, who are really sad, who knew the athlete well, who loved and respected that person. Many people are grieving.”
