Cowboys DC Mike Zimmer and star Micah Parsons disagree over defense issues after devastating loss to Saints

The Cowboys defense doesn’t seem to be on the same wavelength after their devastating home loss to Dallas on Sunday afternoon.

While the Cowboys agree that there are one or more problems that need to be addressed – the New Orleans Saints won comfortably 44-19 – defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and star Micah Parsons have conflicting explanations for what happened.

Parsons, who recorded three tackles in the loss, attributed Dallas’ defensive problems to a lack of effort in his podcast on Monday.

“Not all 11 (players) put in the effort… At the end of the day, during training camp and throughout the whole preseason preparation process, you have a certain standard that you hold yourself to,” Parsons said. “We didn’t hold ourselves to that standard.”

Zimmer dismissed the notion that the Cowboys did not show enough effort on Sunday.

“I don’t think it was really a matter of effort,” Zimmer said Monday, via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “This team beat us a few times at the snap… We weren’t moving fast enough… I just have to play better.”

Although there is a clear discrepancy between Parsons and Zimmer, Parsons agreed that they “didn’t fly to the ball” or “block” well enough against the Saints, who scored a touchdown on each of their first six drives of the game.

Parsons also defended Zimmer on social media after the loss. Zimmer, the former head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, will enter his first season with the Cowboys this fall.

“For me, it had nothing to do with the scheme. I thought (Mike Zimmer) called a pretty good game,” Parsons said after the game, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “At the end of the day, I just think we were outplayed. Whoever played on the field, nobody gave 100%. That’s just my responsibility and I’m telling the truth. We all need to play better.”

Parsons and the Cowboys will now turn their attention to the Baltimore Ravens (0-2) in Week 3. In the meantime, fixing their defensive flaws – whether they have anything to do with effort or not – will certainly be a priority for Zimmer and Parsons in the coming days.
