The owner of this 1972 Corvette convertible in New Jersey says the finish line is in sight, but he’s not sure he’ll take the checkered flag himself.

Instead, he put his old C3 up for sale on eBay, where the winning bid rose to $9,300; the auction ended Sunday afternoon.

This is still below the reserve price and well below the value that a properly restored frameless car could fetch on the open market.

First things first, this is by no means a numbers-matching Trailer Queen. The original engine was replaced, albeit with a pretty impressively powerful 355 with roller rocker arms, “nice” cam, 11:1 compression, headers, 850 Holley HEI unit with speed drive and Be Cool radiator, mated to an M21 four-speed manual transmission.

How the car runs is not clear from the listing, but given the work already done, that shouldn’t be a problem.

While the body was removed, the frame was coated in high gloss paint; other mechanical work completed includes all new brake lines, throttle lines, calipers and suspension.

Unfortunately, the owner freely admits that the car’s current white paint looks like it was applied with a roller – “probably not,” he adds, “it’s just not a great paint.”

The black canvas top is supposed to be “newer”, so that should be one less problem.

Inside, the car’s blue interior isn’t terrible, but would definitely look better with repainted or brand new door panels, as well as new seat covers, a new rear console cover, new carpet, and other small items. All ads are functional, according to the seller.

If no one pays the reserve bid by the end of the auction this weekend, the seller says he may keep his “fast toy” and have his coachbuilder finish the paint job when he gets the chance.
