Jayden Daniels will undergo further testing Monday after leaving the Washington Commanders’ game against the Carolina Panthers because of a rib injury, coach Dan Quinn said, repeatedly adding he had no further information on the rookie quarterback’s status.

“I can’t give you an update on Jayden, but I will as soon as we find out,” Quinn said Sunday after Daniels was injured early in his team’s 40-7 win. “As soon as I find out tomorrow I’ll give you some updates, but I don’t have any tonight.”

Daniels’ mother, Regina Jackson, posted the simple message on social media: “He’s fine.” Partner Magic Johnson wrote that he’s praying Jayden Daniels’ injury isn’t serious!

After seven games in a season with playoff aspirations, the Commanders are 5-2 but have no clarity on Daniels.

“Obviously it’s going to take some time or whatever,” said veteran Marcus Mariota, who replaced Daniels and threw two touchdown passes and 205 yards. “We have no idea. But I think he was in a good mood, and for the most part, you just check on him, see how he’s doing, and we’ll take care of it day by day.”

Daniels, who ran for 46 yards on the Commanders’ first offensive snap, took several hits on their opening drive – including a head-over-heel fall on the play. It wasn’t exactly clear when he was injured, Quinn was just sure it happened on that trip.

LSU’s No. 2 pick and 2023 Heisman Trophy winner appeared to be in pain as he left the field after a third-down completion before Austin Seibert’s field goal that gave Washington a 10-0 lead. He first went to the bank, but then moved to the blue medical tent to be examined.

After Andy Dalton’s second interception of the first quarter, Daniels left the tent and went back on the field to throw a few passes. He returned to the sideline and slammed his helmet on the turf before returning to the tent, and Mariota took control of the attack.

“When you see him go down, it’s tough for us,” said top receiver Terry McLaurin. “Marcus did a great job.”

Daniels then walked from the sideline through the tunnel to the locker room, towel in hand.

“We warmed him up, he threw some, we took him to the tent and the next step was, ‘We’re going to take you in and take pictures there,'” Quinn said. “And he’ll take a few more pictures tomorrow.”

With Washington leading 27-0 at halftime, Daniels returned to the sideline in sweatpants and a hoodie in the third quarter, and the team ejected him soon after. He spent the rest of the game chatting with his teammates on the bench.

“We’re not going to put (Daniels) or other people in a situation where they could endanger something,” Quinn said. “I don’t have any medical information, so please don’t speculate.”

Daniels entered the game as the favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. He threw for 1,404 yards, ran for 322 yards and accounted for 10 touchdowns in his first six games.
