Columbus Day/Indigenous People’s Day is Monday: What’s open and closed in NYC?

STATEN ISLAND, NY – On Monday, October 14, the United States will celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day alongside Columbus Day.

In addition to the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the Americas in 1492, the federal holiday also honors the history and culture of Native Americans and other indigenous peoples.

Here’s a look at what’s open and closed on Staten Island for the holiday:

Staten Island push: The newspaper will publish.

Post office: U.S. post offices are closed and there is no mail delivery.

DMV: The state Department of Motor Vehicles is closed.

Finance: The financial markets are open.

Banks: Some are closed.

Government: Non-essential federal, state and city government offices and courts are closed.

Transport: The Staten Island Ferry runs regularly. The Staten Island Railway operates a regular weekday schedule. The buses run on a reduced schedule. New York City’s subways also run on a regular weekday schedule. Further service details can be found at new.mta.info.

Hygiene: The city’s Sanitation Department announced there will be no curbside trash, compost or recycling collection Monday. Residents who normally receive Monday trash, curbside composting or recycling pickup should drop off their material curbside for pickup Monday evening starting Tuesday, Oct. 15. Residents may experience delays in pickup, as is common after public holidays.

For questions about sanitation services and holiday plans, call 311 or visit nyc.gov/sanitation.

Schools: The city’s public schools are closed, as are most private schools. Like the rest of the city, the Department of Education has removed Columbus Day from its calendar and designated the holiday as Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous People’s Day.
