Columbus Day: Are banks and post offices open? Here’s what you need to know about Indigenous Peoples Day.

By Weston Blasi

Monday is both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day, and there are several closures to monitor

Monday, October 14th marks Columbus Day, also known as Indigenous Peoples Day.

Columbus Day has been an official federal holiday since 1937 — and although it has long honored explorer Christopher Columbus’s landing in North America, some states and cities have renamed the holiday Indigenous Peoples Day to highlight the losses suffered by Native Americans compared to the Europeans who colonized the continent.

President Biden became the first U.S. commander in chief to mark Indigenous Peoples Day at the White House.

Find out what’s open and closed on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day.

The bond markets are closed.

No, most banks will not be open.

Federal Reserve banks and their branches will be closed on Monday as almost all banks follow the Fed’s holiday schedule. You can also check with your local bank branch to be sure.

ATMs continue to operate normally and digital banking features such as money transfers and check deposits remain available online or through your bank’s app.

No, post offices will be closed on Monday and there will be no regular mail deliveries or parcels. There will also be no caller service or mailbox service.

Some U.S. Postal Service features may still be available online. Customers can order stamps, boxes and other postal supplies, print shipping labels or schedule package pickup after the holiday. Customers interested in these services must have a USPS.com account.

Are schools open on Columbus Day?

This is more complicated.

School closures for kindergarten through 12th grade vary by state and school district. For example, some schools in New York and Arizona are closed, but they remain open in Florida and North Carolina. Sometimes this can also vary by city within a state.

Observance of public holidays in schools can also differ between private institutions and public schools. Be sure to contact your school administration if you have any questions about the closure.

The closure of motor vehicle locations in the states also varies by state. DMV offices in New Jersey remain closed while those in Florida remain open. So be sure to check with your local DMV.

What about restaurants and shops?

Most retail, chain and grocery stores will be open Monday, possibly with modified hours.

Some retailers have designated a federal holiday specifically for their own business in the past — like Target (TGT) and Nike (NKE) for Juneteenth — but most retailers appear to be open this Monday. Check with your local stores to be sure.
