Colorado Department of Transportation reduces speed in construction zone on I-70 where fatal accident occurred

Although authorities still haven’t said what caused a semi-truck to overturn on Interstate 70 near Ward Road, sending blue pipes flying into oncoming traffic, one thing is certain: The speed limit in that area is changing.

The crash at the beginning of the month three people killedincluding a newlywed couple and the bride’s mother, and several other people injured.

“It has to change,” said Phillip Howard, a tractor-trailer driver.

“Even when I was driving at 80 km/h, it was still kind of scary,” added another driver, who asked us to keep her name anonymous.

Following the fatal accident, CDOT officials initiated a review of speed limits in this special work zone.

In a statement, a CDOT spokesperson said, in part: “The construction site has been set up in accordance with appropriate safety protocols, however, we will continue to reduce the speed limit in the construction site from 60 to 55 mph and are working to install new signage by Labor Day weekend.”

Just minutes after driving down that stretch of road, Howard began to wonder if the change would really help.

“They need to slow down to about 45 miles per hour. Even though that’s not the speed limit, I suggest they do it anyway,” Howard said. “It’s not illegal to drive slowly.”

He wasn’t the only one wondering if a 5 mph reduction would have an impact.

“You could lower it by 10 and people would still drive 20 over,” added the unnamed driver.

CDOT says workers will also install flashing lights to make the new speed limit signs more visible, and they will install a speed radar feedback sign to alert drivers how fast they are going.

Ultimately, real change begins with drivers, the woman said: “It will only work if people comply, and many do not.”
