College football top 10 rankings: Georgia moves up

It’s a new era of college football.

If the College Football Playoffs Although the committee will begin releasing rankings later this season, they won’t be the be-all and end-all for the 12-team field given the new seeding rules. But the rankings are still fun and people will still fight over them. They are still important.

That’s why every weekend, after the dust settles from the games, I’ll reveal my updated top 10. Here is the latest edition:

1. Oregon (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten)

Dan Lanning celebrated his first win as Oregon coach last weekend when the Ducks defeated Ohio State. So when Oregon flew across the country for a game against Purdue On Friday evening it seemed like a classic point of disappointment. Instead, Oregon dominated the Boilermakers en route to a 35-0 victory in a game that lacked the drama we expect from Friday night games. Oregon should be considered the national title favorite as the Ducks are in full swing as the season progresses. It seems far from certain that Oregon will be in Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship Game.

2. Georgia (6-1, 4-1 SEC)

Georgia’s results this season were confusing heading into the weekend. The Bulldogs started the season with a win against Clemson, then struggled against Kentucky before losing to an Alabama team that now looks pretty shaky. Many of us wondered whether Georgia should be considered the favorite to win the national title this year. Then the Bulldogs came to Austin on Saturday night and dominated a Texas team that we all thought was the most complete team in America. If you were hoping to see a 12-team playoff without Georgia, that probably won’t happen. The Bulldogs are back.

3. Ohio State (5-1, 2-1 Big Ten)

Ohio State had a bye week this week, meaning the Buckeyes had to endure the heartbreaking loss they suffered at Oregon last weekend. There were a lot of questions about it Ryan Day and whether he can win the big game, which has many questioning whether this Ohio State team could actually win the Big Ten and/or the national title. The Buckeyes still have plenty of opportunity to prove that they are one of the best teams in the nation, not just the most talented. There’s a big game coming up at Penn State on November 2nd.

4. Texas (6-1, 2-1 SEC)

Texas entered the weekend viewed by many as the best and most complete team in college football. It’s crazy what playing against Georgia can do to humiliate a team, isn’t it? Georgia absolutely destroyed the Longhorns in the first half, so badly Steve Sarkisian even went there Arch Manning to try and bring some life into his squad. Although the Longhorns fought hard in the second half and felt like they were back in the game, Georgia stifled them, just as the Bulldogs have done to so many teams over the years. However, there is still plenty of life in Texas. This is a team that could still contend for the SEC title.

5. Penn State (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten)

Penn State is coming off an overtime win against USC and rested as an undefeated team during the bye this week. The Nittany Lions have a lot of really good plays in key spots and the emergence of Tyler Warren It was fun to watch. One could argue that Warren, who was essentially Penn State’s entire offensive lineman in Los Angeles, should be included in the Heisman Trophy conversation. But there are still doubts about this James Franklin Ohio State can’t be beat. November 2nd can’t come soon enough. While we wait, Penn State is one of the top five teams in America.

6. Miami (7-0, 3-0 ACC)

Is it time to start a dialogue about this? Miami has the best offense in college football? Electrifying quarterback? Check. Great receivers? Check. Good offensive line? Check. Powerful, reliable running back? Check. The problem? Miami has plenty of defensive issues that could cost the Hurricanes on their way to winning the ACC title. It was an entertaining 52-45 win over Louisville on Saturday, but Miami had been flirting with disaster the entire previous month. However, Miami has won all seven of its games and appears to be on a collision course with Clemson in Charlotte.

7. Clemson (6-1, 5-0 ACC)

Clemson continues to win games with ease, so it’s getting easier to forgive the blemish on the Tigers’ resume – a crushing loss to Georgia in the season opener. quarterback Cade Klubnik threw for 308 yards and three touchdowns and Clemson seemed to have it figured out offensively. While it’s hard to say whether Clemson should scare the sport’s big dogs after what happened against the Bulldogs, it should be considered the favorite in the ACC. There’s a real chance this team has changed enough in the last six weeks to push the best teams in college football, especially because most of the sport’s titans don’t look quite as unbeatable as they did a month ago.

8. Tennessee (6-1, 3-1 SEC)

Tennessee defeated Alabama on Saturday afternoon at Neyland Stadium. It may not feel as impactful as beating the Crimson Tide in 2022, but it is a monumental win for the Volunteers. While there’s no doubt that the Alabama team that just beaten Tennessee is inherently flawed, the Volunteers didn’t play their best either. And it won. Nico Iamaleava had some issues with accuracy but got stronger as the game progressed. Tennessee’s remaining schedule gives it a real chance to make the College Football Playoff. When it gets hot, it’s enough to run.

9. BYU (7-0, 4-0 Big 12)

BYU was in a tough spot. A Big 12 game against Oklahoma State on a Friday evening? What could go wrong? The Cowboys actually scored the go-ahead touchdown with 1:13 to play. It seemed as if the Cougars were on the verge of losing and plunging the Big 12 race into a state of complete disarray once again. Then BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff led a thrilling last-minute drive that ended with a 35-yard touchdown pass Darius Lassiter 10 seconds left. BYU remained undefeated with a narrow home win. The Cougars are such a fun team this year.

10. Indiana (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten)

Indiana has been on the national radar for the past three weeks, but much of the country can’t take these Hoosiers seriously because of the program’s history. Yes, Indiana has had a pretty easy schedule this season, but teams accidentally don’t get to 7-0. Curt Cignetti has become the hottest coach in America and the Hoosiers dominated Nebraska 56-7 at home on Saturday. Indiana has to play Ohio State on the road on November 23rd, but the Hoosiers are expected to win every other game they play this year. Do the math. That means it’s a legitimate College Football Playoff contender.
