Colin Kaepernick wants to run a new sport for the US team at the 2028 Olympic Games

Colin Kaepernick is already looking ahead to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback said in a recent interview that he would like to play flag football for the U.S. national team, a new Olympic sport that debuted in 1928.

“Hopefully we’re out there,” Kaepernick told Sky Sports. “We’ll work on some things and see if we can get in there. But we’d love to be out there.”

Flag football is one of the few sports offered in Los Angeles, along with T20 cricket, lacrosse (sixes), baseball, softball and squash. It is played in a 5-a-side format on a field 50 yards long and 25 yards wide.

Kaepernick, 36, has not played in an NFL game since 2016, his final year with San Francisco. In 69 career games (58 starts), Kaepernick threw for 12,271 yards, 72 touchdowns and 30 interceptions – which corresponds to a career passer rating of 88.9.

After leaving the 49ers in 2016, Kaepernick was not signed to a contract during the following offseason. He filed a grievance against the NFL, accusing the owners of colluding to ban him from the league because he kneeled during the national anthem before games to protest police brutality and racial inequality in the United States.

Kaepernick has publicly expressed his interest in returning to the NFL in recent years and even trained with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022. He told Sky Sports that he would still be interested in playing in the NFL this season if the opportunity arose.

“This is something I’ve trained for my whole life,” Kaepernick told Sky Sports about a potential return to the NFL. “I think it would be a big moment, a big accomplishment for me to be able to get back on the field. Also, I think I can bring a lot to a team and help them win a championship.”

For now, however, it looks like Kaepernick is working toward winning a gold medal in flag football in four years.
