Coldplay announces that the latest album will be the band’s twelfth

After Coldplay releases its 10th album, “Moon Music,” on Oct. 4, the band will only record two more, said frontman Chris Martin.

“We’re only going to make 12 proper albums and that’s true. Yes, I promise,” Martin said in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe (via People). “Because less is more and for some of our critics even less would be more! It’s really important that we have that boundary.”

Martin emphasized why the band sets a limit for themselves, adding: “There are only seven ‘Harry Potter’ books.” There are only 12.5 Beatles albums, about the same for Bob Marley, so for everyone our heroes. Plus, that limit means the quality control is so high at the moment and it’s almost impossible for a song to make it, which is great.”

Martin added that while the band might be “idle” at this point in the boys’ careers, instead “we’re trying to improve.”

Another reason Coldplay plans to stay away from the studio after two more albums, according to Martin, is that “there’s so much wrangling between people” to make a “great” project, “and I want to give some of that to the others.” . “Live for yourself.”

He added: “When we’re 60, I don’t want to say, ‘Will (champion), we need you.’ Light up! We can do better!’”

Still, Martin said he won’t be done making music when Coldplay retires from producing studio albums.

“It’s kind of always going to go on like that, but there’s something about the Coldplay thing,” Martin said. “I don’t know where the songs come from. I don’t know where the ideas come from, but they’ve only come to mind for about four or five years. Like, ‘You have to end like this,’ and I trust that as much as I trust the songs.”

It’s possible, he said, that there could be side projects between him and his Coldplay bandmates Guy Berryman, Phil Harvey, Will Champion and Jonny Buckland. “If we do anything creatively after that that goes beyond touring, then it’s going to be something different, or it’s going to be a side thing, or it’s going to be a compilation of things that we haven’t finished yet,” Martin said.

Coldplay’s next album “Moon Music” will be released on Friday, October 4th.
