Christian Watson shows support for Romeo Doubs after his return to the Packers

Christian Watson wants Romeo Doubs to know one thing when he returns from a one-game suspension this week:

“Nothing but love and open arms for our guy,” Watson tweeted Friday in response to a video containing part of Doubs’ interview in his locker on Friday, his first comments since his unexcused absence from practice last week.

Watson included a hand-heart emoji in his post.

Watson and Doubs came to the NFL together when they were both selected as 2022 draft picks by the Packers. Watson was a second-round pick and Doubs was a fourth-round pick. They are part of a young core of talented playmakers on offense.

But after Doubs skipped practice last Thursday and Friday before the Packers’ game against the Los Angeles Rams, he was suspended by the team, a somewhat unexpected development.

When general manager Brian Gutekunst announced the suspension last Saturday, he said in a press release that Doubs’ decisions and actions “had a negative impact on the team and required us to take these actions.”

Doubs said on Friday that he had “a lot going on mentally.”

Doubs, who returned to training on Wednesday, didn’t reveal much more about what he’s going through, but when asked if he was doing well in terms of his mental health, he said he appreciated the question and that it he is “fine.”

“I’m just grateful that I’m still here,” Doubs said. “It’s a great team, great players, great support.”

The third-year wide receiver expressed regret over how he handled the situation and reiterated that his absence had nothing to do with the team.

“I said there were some things going on off the field,” Doubs said. “As far as the organization and the staff and the players are concerned, there is nothing to be done in that area.”

Doubs will be back on the field when the Packers play the Arizona Cardinals in a Week 6 game on Sunday at Lambeau Field.
