Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, former Texas Tech star, donates millions to the football program

Patrick Mahomes has been an outstanding ambassador for Texas Tech Athletics throughout his career following his time with the Red Raiders, and his willingness to give back was evident again on Thursday.

Texas Tech Athletics announced that Mahomes made a $5 million donation to the athletic program to support the “historic Campaign for Fearless Champions,” a program created to modernize Tech’s athletic facilities.

“When we launched this campaign, Patrick was just a freshman and now it’s fitting that we approach the end of the campaign with a gift of our own,” said Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt. “We couldn’t be prouder to announce this gift from Patrick and Brittany Mahomes. We are so proud of Patrick for all he has accomplished and how he has continually supported Texas Tech on a global level.”

Mahomes’ donation to the university will support the newly renovated south end zone and the ongoing Womble Football Center project, which will create the largest contiguous football facility in the country, according to a press release from Texas Tech Athletics.

The $5 million brings fundraising efforts for the project to $115 million and helps exceed the athletic department’s $100 million goal for the project.

The gift is not the only significant donation Mahomes has made to Texas Tech, as Mahomes also played a key role in Tech’s ten-year apparel partnership with Adidas announced in early July.

“There is no better ambassador for Texas Tech athletics than Patrick Mahomes,” said head coach Joey McGuire. “He is arguably the greatest brand in sports, not only because of his success on the field, but also because of what he and his family do off the field. Since being hired here at Texas Tech, I have realized how much Patrick truly loves this university and the football program, and this gift further underscores that. On behalf of our entire program, we cannot thank Patrick and Brittany enough for the impact they have on our student-athletes and the future of Texas Tech football.”
