Chiefs announce plans for Red Wednesday Celebration in conjunction with 2024 NFL Kickoff Game

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced further details on Red Wednesday, the 2024 edition of the club’s traditional Red Friday celebration, which will take place on Wednesday, September 4. For the 11thth For this consecutive year, the club will sell a limited-edition commemorative flag for a minimum donation of $5 to celebrate this annual tradition and support Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City. This year’s flag – featuring a special championship design to honor the team’s victories in Super Bowls LVII and LVIII – will be sold at more than 135 McDonald’s restaurants in Kansas City and St. Joseph, Hy-Vee locations in Kansas City, and on street corners and other public locations throughout the metropolitan area. Over the past 10 years, the sale of Red Friday flags has raised over $5.5 million to help RMHC-KC continue its mission of keeping families together in times of illness and hardship. Fans who do not live in the greater Kansas City and St. Joseph areas can order their flags online at shop.chiefs.com for $10 starting Wednesday morning, Sept. 4. Both domestic and international shipping options are available for online orders. Net proceeds from domestic online sales also benefit RMHC-KC.

“The tradition of Red Friday – and now Red Wednesday – is one of the most unique ways the organization and community come together to support each other and support a special cause,” said Chiefs President Mark Donovan. “We recently broke some Red Friday records and expect this year to be no different with back-to-back championships. The work that Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City does for the families they serve, combined with the generous spirit of the community, inspires our entire organization and continuing this tradition is the perfect way to start the 2024 football season.”

Red Wednesday (Red Friday) honors the long-standing tradition of selling team-related memorabilia throughout the city to raise money for local charities. This tradition was started in 1992 by Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt and the Chiefs Red Coaters. Since Red Friday’s inception, approximately $6 million has been raised for local charities through the sale of newspapers, magazines and flags, with a focus on supporting youth in need.

This year, the festivities will begin the week before Red Wednesday and continue through the home opener against the Ravens. There will be numerous events and other opportunities for the team to connect with the community and for Chiefs Kingdom to connect with the club.

Flag Sale – Wednesday, September 4

Chiefs Kingdom flags will be available at McDonald’s locations in Kansas City and St. Joseph starting Wednesday morning. They will also be available at Hy-Vee locations in Kansas City and on street corners throughout the metro area. Fans outside of Kansas City and St. Joseph can secure their flag starting Wednesday morning at shop.chiefs.com. As with in-person flag purchases, flags purchased online domestically will benefit RMHC-KC. Fans are encouraged to use the hashtag #RedWednesday on their social media channels when securing their flag.

Red Wednesday Run presented by GEHA – Wednesday, September 4th

The fifth annual Red Wednesday Run presented by GEHA is officially set for Wednesday, September 4. While the official race day is Red Wednesday, registration for the virtual race is now open and will end at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, September 6. Since there is no official race course for the event, Chiefs fans across the country and around the world can participate in the Red Wednesday Run by running or walking in their neighborhood, at a local park, on a nature trail or on their treadmill.

Registration is currently open at www.chiefs.com/redwednesdayrun/. All participants will receive this year’s special edition Red Wednesday flag to benefit RMHC-KC and a Red Wednesday Run t-shirt mailed directly to the address provided during registration. Additionally, all race participants will receive a seven-day all-access pass that can be redeemed at any Chiefs Fit location. Once participants complete the 5K, they are asked to take a photo in their Chiefs/Red Friday Run gear with their Red Friday flag and post it on social media using the hashtag #RedWednesday.

World’s Biggest Tailgate Party – Thursday, September 5th

The Chiefs World’s Largest Tailgate is back for the second consecutive year to celebrate the start of the football season. As part of the countdown to the start of the 2024 season, the Chiefs are inviting fans from around the world to join in the virtual fun of this year’s event, the “Tailgate Games.” The show will stream unique tailgate-themed competitions for free to mobile devices and living rooms in Chiefs Kingdom and around the world at www.chiefslive.com.

Co-hosted by actor and comedian Rob Riggle and host Hayley Lewis, World’s Largest Tailgate: Tailgate Games will showcase the legendary tailgate experience of GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, celebrate the welcoming spirit of Chiefs fans and emphasize the fun of friendly competition. The Broadcast Boys – podcasters Lucas Brody and Nelson Vergara – will serve as special Tailgate Games correspondents, while the stream will also feature guest appearances from YouTube star Funny Marco, comedian and actor Desi Banks, actress and comedian Heidi Gardner, and Chiefs Hall of Fame WR/KR Dante Hall and others.

The hour-long show will be streamed from the parking lots outside GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium beginning at 5 p.m. CT. Fans can now visit www.chiefslive.com to reserve their free virtual seat.

Additionally, Chiefs jerseys, flags, graphics, red lights and other visuals will be visible throughout Kansas City starting today as the city prepares for Red Wednesday and the start of football season. Special media opportunities, including interviews, B-roll and visual opportunities, will be distributed in the coming days.
