Chicken served at 200 Philly schools, part of nationwide recall – NBC10 Philadelphia

Chicken products served to students at nearly 200 Philadelphia schools may be contaminated with listeria, the district said Friday.

Oz Hill, the chief operating officer of the Philadelphia School District, said they were informed by Whitsons Culinary Group that the following chicken products supplied to some schools in the district were part of a nationwide meat and poultry recall because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes:

  • Pre-K: Chicken and Broccoli Alfredo Penne (served October 8)
  • Substitute for preschoolers with a food allergy: Chicken Strips, Honey Mustard, Green Beans (served between October 4th and 10th) and Chicken with Caribbean Pineapple Sauce, Rice and Carrots (served between October 4th and 10th)
  • K-12 Locations: Chicken with BBQ Sauce, Rice, Baked Beans (served September 23, 2024)

The full list of affected schools can be found here.

Listeria is a bacteria that can contaminate many foods. Those most at risk of listeria infection include pregnant women, newborns, adults age 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems, according to the CDC.

“Fortunately, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Division (FSIS), there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions from consuming these meals,” Hill wrote.

Hill said the school district’s food services department is removing all remaining items from its school lunch services.

“Your child will not be served this item in the future,” Hill wrote.
