Chicago teens receive REAL IDs to pre-register as voters

CHICAGO (CBS) — Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day for Teens, and beyond just voting, Leo High School wants to empower young people to make change in their communities by asking its students for their ID cards so they can pre-register on Tuesday.

Steven and Stephen Jackson are 16-year-old twins who attend Leo High School, a Catholic boys’ high school in Chicago’s Auburn-Gresham neighborhood. They received REAL ID for the first time on Monday.

“Personally, I’ve never really had an ID card. And the fact that my principal, who is a great guy by the way, actually decided to provide an entire van for us students to get an ID card,” said Steven Jackson, an eleventh-grader at Leo High School.

More than 50 students received their copies on Monday.

“I want to be able to pre-register to vote tomorrow since we have this event here. And I want my voice to be heard,” said Aiden Lott, a 12th-grader at Leo High School.

Lott talks about National Teen Voter Registration Day, a nationwide initiative to inspire and engage young people in the democratic process.

This is the first time the school has partnered with the Illinois Secretary of State’s Mobile Van to provide students with a valid form of ID. The campaign supports the effort because students need a government-issued ID to register or pre-register to vote.

“We wanted to provide a space for young people to raise their voices. Young people often have the opportunity to get up to mischief. We wanted to give them the opportunity to become politically active,” said Dr. Shaka Rawls, principal of Leo High School.

The Jackson twins got a taste of politics last month. They are members of the Soul Children of Chicago and They performed the national anthem at the DNC.

“I used to not think about voting until the event happened. And then when it did happen, I thought maybe I might care about this or how people view this. So when I heard this was happening, I had to jump on it,” said Stephen Jackson. “I definitely feel like that inspired me to do this program in some ways because I saw that A) I could pre-register to vote. In two years, I’ll actually be able to vote.”

National Teen Voter Registration Day coincides with the first debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

You can watch live coverage of the presidential debate starting Tuesday night at 8 p.m. live on CBS News Chicago.
