Chase warns against exploiting system flaws to steal cash: This is ‘fraud, plain and simple’ | US News

US banking giant Chase has made it clear that exploiting a system glitch to withdraw cash was “fraud, plain and simple”, even though it has now become a TikTok trend.

Chase Bank’s warning on Monday came in response to viral social media posts that alleged customers were trying to withdraw more money than they had in their accounts by taking advantage of a delay in the banking system.

According to People, users reported knowingly cashing bad checks, often for large amounts of money, and then immediately withdrawing the money from Chase ATMs before the check could bounce.

Chase said in a statement that the problem had been resolved and warned that the trend was actually just simple check fraud.

“We are aware of this incident and have addressed it,” Chase said in a statement. “Regardless of what you see online, cashing a fraudulent check and withdrawing the funds from your account is fraud, plain and simple.”

The number of Chase customers who have attempted this is not immediately known.

A video posted on social media shows alleged participants cheering with joy and throwing cash in the air. However, other videos show alleged participants later becoming upset when they saw that their bank accounts had a large negative balance after the bad checks eventually bounced, but their cash withdrawals were still recorded.

Social media users who watched the viral trend spread often responded with humorous remarks.

“Checkkiting. It’s called checkkiting. And it’s been around since the invention of… checks,” wrote Dan Awrey, a law professor at Cornell University, on X.
