Charley Hull defeats Nelly Korda 6 and 4 and takes the first point in singles

GAINESVILLE, Va. – Excuse the cruel pun, but Charley Hull beat Nelly Korda in the singles match of the Solheim Cup on Sunday.

In the first game of the last session at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, Hull defeated the world number one 6 and 4.

“I knew you had to play unbelievably to beat her and to beat Nelly. She’s a great player and I put my – well, my heart and soul into the game,” Hull said.

The match was tied after five holes before Hull won the sixth and seventh holes with pars. Hull was gifted a 2-up lead and took the lead from there.

She birdied holes 8, 11 and 13 to move five points ahead before closing the match with a legal eagle on the par-5 14th, where she hit a 6-iron into tap-in range from 165 yards.

“I just love playing under pressure. I absolutely love it,” Hull said. “That’s why I always feel like I play well in the majors. I love big events, playing in front of crowds and on tough, challenging golf courses. It’s something I just love doing.”

Hull’s victory reduced Europe’s deficit to 10-7. The USA needed 4.5 points to win the trophy and had led in most of the remaining games on the pitch.

For Korda, her singles play continued her trend of disappointing performances in big, individual moments. After winning six times to start the season, Korda missed the cut at two consecutive majors (with shots in the 80s at both). She had a chance to medal at the Olympics but ended up making triple bogey and finishing tied for 22nd. She also led by four shots at the halfway point of the AIG Women’s Open at St. Andrews but closed 75-72 to finish tied for second.

Korda won her three partner matches before the singles. She is now 10-5-1 in four Cups. Hull is now 15-9-3 in seven appearances.
