Celtic 5:1 Slovan Bratislava: Brendan Rodgers praises “greed, hunger and mentality”

“We played well in the first half, scored the early goal and had other opportunities to be more targeted, but I just felt that we attempted one ball too often.

“We’ve reiterated that we don’t have to do anything special. We just have to be ourselves. But don’t think about it too much.”

“The hype about the Champions League is unbelievable, but we are playing against a team that defends in a 4-4-2 system and that we will play against here in the league. OK, they are different classes, but it is still the same idea.”

“You could already see in the second half that the players were absolutely sensational. We could have had more than five players.”

It was a great start for Celtic in the tournament, which has been expanded to 36 teams in a league that will play seven more games.

Borussia Dortmund travel to Germany in two weeks’ time and will pose a far tougher test, before games against RB Leipzig, Club Brugge and Young Boys in Glasgow and away games at Atalanta, Dinamo Zagreb and Aston Villa.

A place in the top eight would automatically put Celtic in the last 16, with the teams ranked 9th to 24th playing in a play-off.

According to an analysis by Opta, 16 points would almost certainly secure a place in the top eight and 10 would be enough for a play-off place.

“Our next three games are tough but exciting,” Rodgers added.

“We know it’s a long road, but the first steps are important and the steps we took tonight were fantastic.

“The fans have been sensational. We won the last game of last season and the first of this season, so we’re trying to make this place a fortress.”
