“CBS Mornings Plus” launches this month

The third hour of CBS News’ “CBS Mornings” is scheduled to premiere on September 30. Tony Dokoupil and Adriana Diaz will co-host the additional hour of programming, the network announced Wednesday.

The program will extend the network’s flagship morning show into the 9 a.m. hour. “CBS Mornings Plus” will air weekdays on CBS-owned stations in Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Detroit and Miami. The program will also be simulcast on CBS News 24/7, the network’s free streaming platform.

The third hour is produced by the CBS Mornings team and includes relevant headlines of the day as well as news from pop culture, entertainment, health, wellness and finance.

The program’s two competitors in the morning show market, ABC’s “Good Morning America” and NBC’s “Today,” have already expanded their broadcast times beyond the initial two-hour slot.

“CBS MORNINGS PLUS is a great example of how our broadcast and beyond strategy leverages the strengths of our core brands to grow audiences and position CBS News and Stations for the future, while underscoring our commitment to delivering world-class journalism on every platform,” Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures, said in a statement.

Added executive producer of “CBS Mornings” and “CBS Mornings Plus,” Shawna Thomas, “This expansion of CBS MORNINGS shows a commitment to the brand, and I’m excited to see what this team can do with another hour of time to experiment. People keep saying they wish we had one more hour. Now it’s time for us to do something smart with the time that audiences will appreciate.”

Dokoupil is currently a co-anchor on “CBS Mornings” and has experience both in on-the-ground reporting and as an anchor at major news events. He has interviewed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, comedy legend Steve Martin, music superstar Dolly Parton and many others.

Diaz joined CBS News in 2012 and has served as anchor of the Saturday edition of “CBS Weekend News,” the network’s Asia correspondent and Chicago correspondent. She has interviewed many media figures, including former NFL star Colin Kaepernick, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and U.S. Olympian Allyson Felix.
