Cavaliers could acquire Wizards’ $90 million star in blockbuster trade

The Cleveland Cavaliers enter the 2024-25 season as a sophisticated team to watch in the Eastern Conference.

After an offseason filled with trade rumors, the Cavaliers decided to retain their roster. They signed Donovan Mitchell to a contract extension and ended all trade talks for Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen. They also signed Isaac Okoro to a new contract after he tested out free agency.

With Mitchell back as the team’s star, Cleveland appears poised to compete at the top of the East, but may still need to make a move to overtake the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks.

One player they could pursue is Washington Wizards star Kyle Kuzma.

Kuzma had a career year last season. He averaged 22.2 points and 6.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. He also improved his shooting numbers, shooting 46.3% from the field and 33.6% from three.

With the Wizards far from being a contender, rumors have been circulating that they could trade Kuzma before the trade deadline. By trading him away, they could gain more draft capital to help with their lengthy rebuild.

To match the salaries in a potential trade, Cleveland would have to give up Caris LeVert and Georges Niang as well as some draft capital. They could also send out a package centered around Allen if they decide to trade him.

By adding Kuzma, the Cavaliers would add another offensive weapon to an already loaded roster. The downside to Kuzma is his weak defense, but the Cavs have a lot of great defenders on the roster who should be able to fill his gap.

While a blockbuster trade for Kuzma might not move the Cavaliers to the top of the East, it would improve their chances against the Celtics and Knicks, especially in the playoffs.
