Koe Wetzel – “Casamigos”

Label: Columbia Records

Official release date: September 13, 2024

Koe Wetzel’s “Casamigos” became a fan favorite before it even had a release date. He started teasing and road testing the blistering song long ago, and the question of when he would release the song has been on everyone’s lips ever since.

The song went through several iterations and perhaps an alternate ending or two before it was ready for recording. But now that the breakup ballad is officially here as an extension of Wetzel’s July release, 9 lives, our lips are finally free to sing along.

“Casamigos” comes to life with a few powerful chords and Wetzel’s raspy lilt. It soon develops into a full-bodied country-rock ballad, backed by a sharp rhythm, screeching keys and powerful guitars. By the end of the song, it’s the same gentle strings from the beginning and the artist’s stricken baritone that remain to finish the tune.

It is a contradictory composition that feels both abandoned and liberated, but also a powerful soundscape against the backdrop of a bitter separation.

“Mary Jane took away my driver’s license
And Casamigos took my friend
And you took your shit on the street
Just like you always do
But of all the things I lost last night,
I’m okay with losing you”

In “Casamigos,” Wetzel soaks up the clear light of the morning after going through a lot the night before. He lost his driver’s license to marijuana, his boyfriend to tequila, and his better half for an unknown reason. Of all these things, however, he decides that the latter is the only thing he mayactually live without.

Throughout the song, the artist portrays an on-off relationship – he sings: “It feels like history repeats itself all the damn time” – One that feels toxic and more like a bad habit than real love.

After his departure, his former lover ends up in Dallas, where she may lie, steal and cheat someone else – “Stealing money, serving bottles / With that bleached hair.” For this reason, the artist considers himself lucky and sings: “I’m kind of glad it didn’t work out between us / And I don’t mean to be rude / But that tattoo on your ass / And the past are two things you can’t lose.”

“Mary Jane took away my driver’s license
And Casamigos took my friend
And you took your shit on the street
Just like you always do
But of all the things I lost last night,
I’m okay with losing you
Yes, of all the things I lost last night,
I’m okay with losing you”

What did Koe Wetzel say about “Casamigos”?

‘Casamigos’ was originally intended for Wetzel’s 9 lives. Before the collection’s official release, the song was listed as the third track. However, at some point, the tune was replaced with a cover of XXXTentacion’s “Depression & Obsession,” originally without a word of explanation.

However, Wetzel recently commented on the change, saying he decided that “Casamigos” wasn’t ready for release at the time. The song was rewritten several more times until it was finally perfect.

“The journey behind ‘Casamigos’ took a while,” he explained on social media. “It was a standalone song for a while and then it changed – I think it changed about five or six times… We didn’t really get it right… We got used to it for about a month and then we changed it, but when the final version was done we knew it was right for the song.”

He continued, “I think those ups and downs and those different moments are one of the reasons we kept it confidential from the beginning.”

Mary Jane gave me my driver’s license
And Casamigos took my friend
And you took your shit on the street
Just like you always do
But of all the things I lost last night,
I’m okay with losing you

I can drink the handle
But I can not understand why
Why I let you in through the front door
Just to waste a good farewell
It feels like history repeats itself all the damn time
Because I would have seen it coming if I hadn’t been so high

Mary Jane gave me my driver’s license
And Casamigos took my friend
And you took your shit on the street
Just like you always do
But of all the things I lost last night,
I’m okay with losing you

I heard you moved to Uptown Dallas
Why the hell would you move there?
Stealing money by serving bottles
With this bleached hair
I’m kind of glad it didn’t work out
And I’m not trying to be rude
But the tattoo on your ass
And the past are two things you can’t lose

Mary Jane gave me my driver’s license
And Casamigos took my friend
And you took your shit on the street
Just like you always do
But of all the things I lost last night,
I’m okay with losing you

Mary Jane gave me my driver’s license
And Casamigos took my friend
And you took your shit on the street
Just like you always do
But of all the things I lost last night,
I’m okay with losing you
Yes, of all the things I lost last night,
I’m okay with losing you
