TUOLUMNE COUNTY – A new wildfire broke out in Tuolumne County on Friday night, triggering evacuation orders.

The incident was named the Canyon Fire. It appears to have started in the ravine off Buchanon Road, near Canyon Drive, in the community of Tuolumne.

Cal Fire reports the fire has expanded to 85 acres as of Friday morning. No containment has been reported.

Tuolumne is located about 60 miles east of Modesto.

Canyon Fire Evacuation Orders

A mandatory evacuation order is in effect for the following zones: Ponderosa Hills and the Tuolumne Rancheria area from Tuolumne Road north and east.

An evacuation warning was in effect for Tuolumne City, but the sheriff’s office said those warnings had expired.

An evacuation center will be opened at the Tuolumne Enrichment Center at 102 Hospital Road, Sonora (behind the old hospital) and at the Sonora Senior Center at 540 Greenley Road in Sonora.

The Tuolumne County Animal Control Department is opening a small animal evacuation center at 10040 Victoria Way in Jamestown. A large animal evacuation center will also be established at the Motherlode Fairgrounds.
