A Canadian truck driver will appear in US District Court in Detroit on Wednesday for allegedly attempting to bring 290 kilograms of suspected cocaine across the border at the Ambassador Bridge with the “intent of reselling it.”

According to court documents, it happened shortly before midnight on Monday on the U.S. side of the border crossing.

The documents show that the truck driver was instructed to stop under the bridge, but ignored the order and attempted to drive to the toll booth.

The truck was transporting agricultural equipment.

“CBP officers noticed that the seal on the trailer doors did not match the seal on the documents,” court documents state.

“A search of the trailer revealed a white powdery substance which, when field tested, tested positive for the presence of cocaine.”

According to the original criminal complaint, the cocaine was packaged in boxes that were sealed with tape.

A special agent with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the value of the drugs was about $8.7 million.

In a statement, the Ambassador Bridge Company congratulated Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials on the seizure.

“Ambassador Bridge Company has worked closely with the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) for decades, supporting them in their frontline efforts to prevent dangerous drugs from entering our communities,” said Vice President Kenneth Dobson.
