FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Caltrans announces detour due to upcoming closure of US 395 near Sonora Junction

What you need to know: US 395 will be completely closed for 15 days as part of the Sonora Junction Shoulders Project while workers build two wildlife crossings under the highway to provide safe and sustainable passage for mule deer and other wildlife in the area.

MONO COUNTY – Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 4, US 395 will be completely closed between State Route 108 and south of Burcham Flat Road for 15 days while workers install two wildlife crossings under the roadway as part of the Sonora Junction Shoulders Project. During the closure, construction is scheduled to operate around the clock and vehicles will not be allowed through. To assist drivers, Caltrans has established the following detour:

US 395 northbound in Mono County:

· For motorists heading north to Nevada or beyond, the detour begins on State Route 182 in Bridgeport, which becomes Nevada Route 338 across the state line. At the end of NV 338 in Wellington, NV, drivers turn west onto Nevada Route 208 toward Holbrook Junction.

· Drivers heading north to State Route 108 (Sonora Pass) should follow the detour route above and head south once they reach Holbrook Junction.

US 395 southbound in Nevada:

· Traffic coming from southern Nevada can turn east onto Nevada Route 208 at Holbrook Junction, take NV 338 south from Wellington and follow it to its end at the state line, where it becomes State Route 182, which leads to Bridgeport. This 54-mile detour is about 8 miles longer than driving on US 395 between Bridgeport and Holbrook Junction.

US 395 south from Sonora Pass/Monitor Pass:

· Those traveling over Sonora Pass and Monitor Pass toward Bridgeport and beyond must first travel north on US 395 through the communities of Walker, Coleville and Topaz to reach Nevada Route 208 at Holbrook Junction. Travel east on NV 208, which connects to NV 338, and continue south on the highway to reach Bridgeport.

Drivers should be aware that there will be no service facilities available along the detour route. Anyone needing fuel, groceries, or recharging should use the service facilities in Bridgeport and Walker/Coleville/Topaz before the detour. All four communities will be open for business during the closure.

The accessible roads near the closure include:

· Twin Lakes Road in Bridgeport

· Buckeye Road west of Bridgeport

The roads that will be closed during the closure include:

· Burcham Flat Road from the south side

· Little Walker River Road to Obsidian Campground in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest

Motorists should not attempt to drive through the closure as large portions of the roadway will be completely missing. Construction crews will work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until this phase of the project is completed.

Work schedules are subject to change due to traffic disruptions, weather, availability of equipment or materials, or construction-related issues.

Travelers are asked to pay attention to the workers on the highway, slow down in the pylon zone and, whenever possible, pull over to create more distance. Be careful and be alert in the construction zone!
