Springfield’s Cailee Spaeny will soon be gracing movie screens across the country again.

The Springfield native plays the lead role in the latest installment in the popular science fiction series “Alien.” The nearly two-hour film “Alien: Romulus” will be released in theaters nationwide on Friday, August 16.

Directed by Fede Álvarez — known for directing “Evil Dead” and “Don’t Breathe” — “Alien: Romulus” follows a group of young space colonizers as they raid an abandoned space station, according to the film’s IMDb page. Along the way, the colonizers encounter the series’ main antagonist, the Xenomorph.

Spaeny plays Rain Carradine, the film’s main character. While the film’s plot remains unclear, according to the official trailer, it seems that Carradine hopes to one day leave space-ravaging behind. But like many “Alien” characters, she is forced to think more about her own survival in the presence of “the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

Joining Spaeny on screen is a host of new talent, including Isabela Merced, Aileen Wu, David Jonsson, Spike Fearn and Archie Renaux.

Spaeny began her career in theaters in Springfield and Branson and has attracted widespread attention in recent years with her leading roles as Priscilla Presley in the docudrama “Priscilla” and as an enthusiastic photojournalist in “Civil War.”
