Bruins Surging Defender is a big candidate for breakthrough

Even though the Boston Bruins’ season got off to a bad start last night (October 8) against the Florida Panthers, the team is still optimistic about this season. They added some big-name players in free agency and finally signed Jeremy Swayman, so they should be a real threat in the Eastern Conference.

However, alongside some notable successes such as Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov, they also have some young players who have the potential to make big strides this season. Bruins defenseman Mason Lohrei is easily one of the most notable players.

Lohrei, 23, had a solid rookie season in 2023-24, scoring four goals and 13 points in 41 games. However, his game improved significantly over time as he adapted more to the NHL level. This was particularly the case in the playoffs, as he scored one goal and four points in 11 games during Boston’s postseason run.

Lohrei is expected to be a key part of the Bruins’ defensive group in the 2024-25 season. In the Bruins’ opening game, Lohrei received the second pairing minute and was used in their second power play unit. Obviously, the Bruins are putting him in a position to succeed, and it will be fascinating to see if he can take advantage from here.

Given that Lohrei has great potential and is now in his second season with Boston, one shouldn’t be surprised to see him reach new levels both offensively and defensively in the 2024-25 season.
