Bruins’ Jim Montgomery sends clear messages to his team ahead of the Panthers’ return game

To say that the Boston Bruins’ season opener against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night in South Florida was a disappointment would be an understatement. First Florida raised its Stanley Cup championship banner, then they went out and defeated the black and gold with four goals in the first period.

To make matters worse, the Panthers proved they were already on the Bruins’ minds by luring Boston into penalties and making them play undisciplined hockey. All in all, the defending champions won 6-4. Now, six days later, the Bruins get another chance at their new Atlantic Division rivals, this time at TD Garden, where they’ll look to do 60 minutes better than they did in their opener. If so, then head coach Jim Montgomery has a clear message of success.

Jim Montgomery has a clear message ahead of the Panthers’ rematch

On Sunday, the Bruins hosted an optional skate at Warrior Ice Arena. After a 2-1 overtime win over the Los Angeles Kings, it wasn’t surprising that the third-year Boston coach made the move optional. Montgomery then met with the media and shared what his team needs to do to be more successful against the Panthers on Monday afternoon.

“We have to play ice hockey again” Montgomery said. “I love that we have emotions and they are a rival. But at the same time we have to be disciplined. We get too many penalties.”

On Tuesday night, Trent Frederic took a penalty when Matthew Tkachuk lured him into a penalty and a challenge, but the problem was that Florida’s forward decided not to drop the gloves. Later in the opening period, Nikita Zadorov took a penalty in a scrum that gave the Panthers another power play.

I understand the frustration Boston feels against Florida since the Panthers have eliminated them from the postseason two seasons in a row, but they need to put this behind them and just play hockey. Staying unconventional is almost a must on Monday.
